京大英作文で考える【和文英訳の本質】

英検1級保持者が書きました。

前回からの続きになります。
短いので、前回内容を先ずは確認してください。

英語講師のネットワークで議論になるのは英作文模範答案です。
一般に、英語講師は予備校や出版社の答案は見ないで
出来る限り自分の英語を書いて教団に上がります。
なぜか。
英文を自分で作る際の思考回路が授業内容そのものなので、
「借り物の英文」だと授業がグタグタになるからです。
そのため、英語講師から自力で作成した英文のコメントを
求められることがたまにあります。

今後、英語講師とのやりとりを少しだけ文字化していきます。
大学受験生にとって英語学習のヒントになると思います。
ちなみにここで出場する＜ある英語講師＞は京都大学出身です。

＜ある英語講師＞
明日の授業で京大英作文を扱うねんけど、答案にコメント貰えるかな。
ちなみに、K塾の模範答案が微妙です。
たぶん論理の欠如からコミュニケート出来てないと思います。

【京都大学】
大人になるためには何かを断念しなくてはならない。
単純なあきらめは個人の成長を阻むだけだが、人間は自分の限界を知る必要がある。
単純なあきらめと異なり、大人になるための断念は深い自己肯定感に基づいている。

＜僕のコメント＞
いやー、この日本語は駄文ですね。

＜ある英語講師＞
そこなんよ。
京大の出題意図が読めないし。
コトバの感覚が鋭い受験生であればあるほど苦しくなるよね。

＜僕のコメント＞
「大人になるための断念」＝「自己肯定感」
というのもケッタイですね。
断念することが自己否定感につながるのではなくて
という言外の意味の引っ張られて筆が滑ってるのかな。

＜ある英語講師＞
なんでやねん！
というツッコミがなければ答案作成したとしても、
本当の意味でコトバを扱ったことにならんよね。
そこは生徒に問題提起するつもりやねん。

＜僕のコメント＞
早速、英語に話を向けましょうか。

大人になるためには何かを断念しなくてはならない。

【K塾模範解答】
（訳例1）
To be adult, one has to give up something. Mere abandonment just
delays man’s growth. He should know his own limitations. Unlike the
simple concept of resignation, giving up as part of the process of
growing up is rooted in self-affirmation.
（訳例2）
If you are to reach adulthood, you must abandon something. While
simple abandonment does nothing but hinder personal development,
people have to know their own limits. This abandonment for the
purpose of growth is different from simply giving up, and is based on
one’s desire to accept what one is.

＜ある英語講師＞
こんな感じで作ってみました。
（訳例1）
To be adult/To become adult, we have to give up something important, such as dreams, hopes, and goals. Certainly, this is some kind of despair, but it will (give us good opportunity to)make us realize the range/limits of our ability/potential, which leads to our inner(mental and intellectual)growth.* In this way/Considering this, whether or not we can give up in an adult way depends on/is determined by/is based on whether we can accept ourselves, in particular our negative/bad aspects/points, objectively.　*There are two different aspects in giving up : the childish way of giving up and the adult way of doing that. Unlike the former, the latter is based
on the true recognition of ourselves/ accepting ourselves as we are.

こんなん出ましたけど。
To reach adulthood, we must make sacrifices, which may include letting go of significant aspirations, dreams, and goals. While this can be disheartening, it provides an excellent opportunity to recognize the boundaries of our potential. This recognition, in turn, fosters our mental and intellectual development. Thus, whether we can maturely relinquish these things is contingent on
our ability to objectively accept ourselves, especially our negative attributes.

＜ある英語講師＞
違う角度から書いてみました。
（訳例2）
What is it to become adult?/ What is it becoming adult? To do that, we have to give up something, but there are two different
aspects in it : the childish way of giving up and the adult way of doing that. The former prevents our inner growth/development, but the latter encourages us to grow up/develop though it makes us realize/admit/accept the limits of our ability. (it bring home to us the limits of our ability/potential. Considering this,/ In this way, *throwing away some parts of ourselves to grow up to behave in an adult manner depends on/ comes from the fact that we know ourselves by looking at ourselves from different(positive and negative) angles/viewpoints.
*we can throw away some part of ourselves to grow up to be an adult
mainly because we know ourselves by accepting both our good and bad
points/aspects.

こんなん出ましたけど。
What does it mean to transition into adulthood? To achieve this, we must relinquish certain aspects of our lives. However, this process involves two distinct approaches: the childish way of relinquishing and the mature way of doing so. The former hinders
our personal growth, while the latter encourages us to mature, even though it necessitates acknowledging our limitations. This process underscores the boundaries of our abilities. Taking this into account, shedding certain parts of ourselves to assume a more adult-like behavior hinges on our capacity to self-evaluate from various (positive and negative) perspectives.

＜僕のコメント＞
日本文の「大人になるためには」の箇所の「大人は」
「キチンとした大人」
「ちゃんとした大人」
「ホンマの大人」
「ほんまもんの大人」
「中身のある大人」
「骨のある大人」
「イッパシの大人」
的な感じで精神的成熟を表すために、adult の訳は避けた方が無難かもしれませんね。

これも授業で扱うからコメント貰えるかな。

（京都大学英作文）
子供は好奇心のかたまりだ。それが多くの動物の場合、成熟すると幼い時ほどには好奇心を示さなくなるらしい。ところが、人間は年をとっても様々なことに対する興味を持ち続けることができる。してみると人間はいつまでも子供でいられるという特権を享受する幸福な種族であるのかもしれない。

＜僕のコメント＞
この日本語は先の問題より論理的なので書きやすいかも。

「人間は年をとっても興味を持ち続けることができる」

の箇所は Fact ではなく opinion やから注意したい。
つまり〈現在時制〉を用いて例外を潰さない方が無難かと。
助動詞か be tend/likely to do のような傾向を表す表現、
または副詞で断定回避する方が英語的発想に近づける気がするねん。

＜ある英語講師＞
確かに。採点基準が示されない限り、そのポイントに対する方針は立てにくいけどね。
先ず見て欲しいのは、僕がお世話になった〇〇先生の答案。
定番といって良い書籍の模範答案やし、正しい英語ではあるけどね。
大切な何かが抜けているように感じるのは気のせいかな。

子供は好奇心のかたまりだ。それが多くの動物の場合、成熟すると幼い時ほどには好奇心を示さなくなるらしい。ところが、人間は年をとっても様々なことに対する興味を持ち続けることができる。してみると人間はいつまでも子供でいられるという特権を享受する幸福な種族であるのかもしれない。

Children are full of curiosity. In the case of many animals, they seem to lord the curiosity as they become mature. On the other hand, human beings keep their interest in various things even after they have grown up. Considering this man may be a happy species which enjoys the privilege of remaining a child all through his life.

A child is curiosity itself. It seems that many animals become less curious as they mature. Humankind, however, stay curious about a variety of things even when they grow older. From this point of view, it might be said that human beings are fortunate species that is blessed with the privilege of being children as long as they live.

＜ある英語講師の作成した英語＞
Children are curiosity itself. This is something that we have in common with animals.(at least we believe so), but human beings are different from animals in another point/respect. Many kinds of animals/species show less interest in things when they get adult/mature(grow up) than they do when they are young. However,/On the other hand, this is not true of human beings. When they get older, their interest/curiosity is not lost; they are as interested in things as when young. Considering this/Judging from this
fact, we can safely say that we human beings are lucky/the luckiest of all species because we can keep the kind of curiosity/sensitivity that we have in our childhood, no matter how old we are/regardless of our age.

こんなん出ましたけど。
Children embody curiosity itself. This quality is something we share with animals, or at least we believe so. Yet, humans must differ from animals in another aspect. Many animal species exhibit diminished interest in their surroundings as they grow into adulthood. In contrast, this isn't the case for humans. As we age, our curiosity may remain intact, and our fascination with the world seemingly endures. In light of this, we should appreciate that humans are the most fortunate of all species because we retain the same level of curiosity and sensitivity we had in childhood, regardless of our age.

＜ある英語講師が作成した別解＞
When we are children, we are all curiosity.(we show curiosity toward everything around us) And our curiosity remain the same as long as we live/we have the same level of curiosity all our life. In fact, even when we are old, we can be almost as interested in various things as (we are) when (we are) young. However, this doesn’t apply to animals. ( the same thing is not true of animals.) Once many kinds/species of animals have got mature/get to their adult stage, they show much less curiosity about things around them than they do when (they are) very young. Considering this/Looking at this difference, we will realize how happy/lucky we are (realize what a lucky species we are) because we are the only species that can *stay as sensitive to everything as when they/we are children.

こんなん出ましたけど。
During childhood, we all exude[show] curiosity, showing an eagerness to explore everything around us. Possibly, our curiosity persists throughout our lives. Even in old age, we may maintain nearly the same level of interest in various subjects as we did in youth. However, this does not apply to animals. In fact, many animal species lose much of their inquisitiveness about the world around them once they reach adulthood. Observing this contrast, we should appreciate our good fortune as a species, for we are the unique species capable of maintaining the same level of sensitivity to the world as we did in childhood.

要するに、和文英訳では論理の一貫性のためにある程度情報を可視化すべきやと思う。
日本語で論理を突き詰めたら奇妙に響くから、論理の一貫性に関わる情報が
表面化してない場合があると思うねん。
それぞれの言語特性を考慮すると、和文英訳という出題形式そのものにムリがあるねんけど。

＜僕のコメント＞
それは突き詰めたら、「日本語の操作をいうテクニックを受験生にどこまで持ち込むか」
という基準の話になるよね。
「和文英訳」がいかなるルールで設定されているか。
「和文英訳」をどう捉えて学習すべきか。
という2点つの論点になると思うな。
これって同時通訳者が駆使している思考戦略と思うな。
ただし、僕らは本質的にアプローチをする際に生徒に曲解されるリスクを負うよね。
それを考えると、教団で深入りする際には細心の注意が必要やんな。

ホンマにそう思う。
同時通訳の松本道弘先生の書籍を読んでも理解できなかったけど。
結局は日本語特有のロジックの欠如を喚起されてたんちゃうかな。
松本先生がよく言われていた日本語における「腹芸」ってあったやん。
理解できたとは言えないけど、今になってやっと少し分かる気もするねん。

＜僕のコメント＞
大学は入試問題に対する採点基準を示すべきですよね。
受験生にとってルールが不明なため、戦い方が定まらない。
実はこれによる社会的損失は計り知れないのではないですか。
