070 The Seeds of Life

The origin of life on Earth is still unknown. Scientists have been able to replicate the atmospheric conditions on Earth around the time that life began. This has led to the creation of complex chemicals which form the basis of life. However, scientists have not been able to make these chemicals replicate, or exhibit any of the characteristics of life forms. While the environment is suitable for life to begin, some spark or seed is needed. A theory called 'panspermia,' meaning "seeds everywhere," suggests a possible origin of this spark. The theory proposes that life exists across the entire universe and can travel from one location to another.

The panspermia theory states that microorganisms can travel on asteroids, meteorites or comets. Life forms may well have moved across space in this way. According to this theory, life on Earth began by organisms arriving from space and flourishing in the conditions here. The discovery of a meteorite found in Antarctica may verify this theory. The meteorite was blasted off the surface of Mars about 15 million years ago and contained structures that may have been the remains of bacteria. This discovery provided the first evidence that the panspermia theory may be true, and could finally answer the question of how life on Earth originated.

071 An Intrepid Explorer

James Cook was born in England in 1728. After five years of schooling, he began to help his family to manage a farm. When Cook was 16, he became an apprentice of a shopkeeper in the coastal town of Staithes. This may have been where his love of the ocean began.

At the age of 18, Cook joined the Royal Navy, working on several ships and fighting in the Seven Years' War. His supreme abilities as a navigator and mapmaker were recognized, and he quickly progressed through the military ranks.

In 1766, Cook's commanders ordered him to sail to Tahiti to make astronomical observations of Venus. He was also provided with a sealed envelope that was top secret, and not to be opened until after his work in Tahiti was complete. When he opened the letter, it said that he should explore the Southern Ocean to find the fabled southern continent. Over the next ll years, Cook would make three voyages to the south Pacific, discover Australia, and become the most traveled person in history at that time. He was ultimately killed by a tribe in Hawaii over several disputes regarding petty theft. Captain James Cook remains one of the greatest explorers of human history.

(C) Laura Secord

Laura Secord is a famous figure in Canada. During the War of 1812, in which Canada and Britain fought against the United States, American soldiers invaded Canada. A group of American soldiers forced Secord's family to let them stay in their house. Secord overheard them planning an attack on the British at a place called Beaver Dams. She traveled 30 kilometers through dangerous forests filled with enemy soldiers to alert the British. Knowing that the attack was coming helped the British to defeat the Americans.

For some time, however, a few historians thought the story was partly untrue. This is because documents written at the time of the battle do not mention Secord. The historians also believed the British had already been warned by local allies. However, documents written by the British commander some years later were uncovered in 1959. These documents confirmed that Secord had indeed brought him the information.
