小学校高学年の英語レッスンでは、「何を読むか」が学びの深さを大きく左右します。
今回取り上げたのは、サーフィン犬シュガーの物語です。
シュガーはもともと野良犬でした。しかし、ある出会いによって人生が変わり、やがてサーフィンの才能を開花させます。そして、なんと世界大会で5回も優勝。多くの人々に愛される存在となりました。晩年はがんと闘い、先日、3月30日に、16歳でその生涯を終えましたが、その生き方は今も人々の心に残り続けています。
このストーリーの魅力は、「努力」「成長」「希望」といった普遍的なテーマを、子どもたちが大好きな“動物”を通して自然に学べる点にあります。英語の難易度も、英検4級から3級レベルへと無理なく橋渡しでき、読解と感情理解が同時に進みます。
授業の最後に私はこう問いかけます。
“What is your wave?”（あなたが挑戦したいことは何？）
子どもたちは「サッカー」「英語」「友だちと仲良くすること」など、自分自身の目標を英語で語り始めます。ただ読むだけで終わらず、「自分ごと」へとつながる瞬間になることを願っています。
知識の習得だけでなく、「心が動く体験」を届けること。
これからの英語教育において、その価値はますます大きくなっていくと感じています。
動物の物語には、子どもたちの心を開く力があります。
そして、その先にあるのは、自分の人生を考える小さな一歩なのです。
The Amazing Surfing Dog, Sugar
Sugar was a special dog. She was not born in a rich home.
She was a stray dog, living on the street.
One day, a kind person found her and took her home.
That changed her life.
Sugar loved the ocean.
When she first saw the sea, she was very excited.
Soon, she started surfing with her owner.
She was very good at it.
People were surprised to see a dog surfing on the waves.
Sugar practiced a lot. She became stronger and more confident.
Then, she joined surfing competitions. She won many times. I
n fact, she became a world champion five times.
Many people around the world loved her. She became famous as a surfing dog.
Sugar also made people happy.
When people watched her, they smiled and felt inspired.
She showed that anyone can shine, even if they start with nothing.
Sadly, Sugar got cancer when she was old.
She passed away at the age of 16.
Many fanswere very sad,
but they remembered her great life.
Today, Sugar is in the Hall of Fame.
She is still loved by many people.
Her story teaches us an important lesson:
with love, effort, and courage, we can achieve our dreams.
