(A)New Developments in Chernobyl
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine has become a symbol of devastation since the nuclear accident there in 1986. In addition to the loss of human life, numerous animals and pine trees died, creating a ghostly forest.
But after the government of Ukraine established a 30-kilometer protected zone around the Chernobyl reactor, wildlife began to recover. Today, birds and rabbits nest within the ruins of the nuclear reactor. Rare species such as eagle owls, lynx, and wild horses are abundant, and forests are green again.
However, not everyone is convinced that all is well. Researchers Anders Moller and Tim Mousseau have determined that certain species in the Chernobyl area have high rates of genetic irregularities, reducing their survival rates. In Italy, about 40 percent of barn swallows return to their home habitats each year, while only 15 percent of the barn swallows in Chernobyl successfully return each year, indicating a much lower survival rate. In addition, the scientists fear that the affected birds will pass on their genetic variations to the global population. This would mean that the adverse effects of Chernobyl are far from over。
