ホルムズ海峡に機雷設置？ 日本の石油と自衛隊を英語授業で考える
コロナ禍を英語で振り返る。
今週の英語クラスでは、ニュースで話題となっている感染症を扱いました。テーマは、
・WHOによる、ハンタウイルス、エボラ出血熱に関する国際的注意喚起
・コロナ禍を経験した私たちの生活
・気候変動と新しい感染症の関係
です。
感染症の授業というと、「怖い話」で終わりがちですが、今回はむしろ、
世界で起きていることを知り、自分で考える
ことを目的にしました。まず、子どもたちは簡単な英語ニュースを読んでもらいます。

Some people on a cruise ship got Hantavirus this year, and several people died. Hantavirus can be very dangerous, but it does not spread easily between people. Health experts say there is no sign of a worldwide outbreak like COVID-19. People should stay calm and follow health advice.

WHO Warns About Ebola Outbreak
The World Health Organization (WHO) is warning people about Ebola in parts of Africa. Ebola can spread through contact with infected body fluids. The disease may cause high fever, weakness, and sometimes bleeding. Health workers are trying to stop the outbreak and help patients.
その後、コロナ禍を思い出しながら、英語でこんな質問をしました。
これは、can ~できる、can not～できない、
また have to ～しなければいけない のリアルな復習になります。
Question 1
During a serious disease outbreak, what can we NOT do?
（感染症が広がった時、人々は何ができなくなりますか？）
子どもたちから出そうな答え：
We cannot travel freely.
We can not go to school.
Families cannot visit sick people.
Question 2
During a disease outbreak, what do we HAVE TO do?
（感染症流行時、人々は何をしなければなりませんか？）
We have to wash their hands.
We have to stay home when we are sick.
We have to share information.
小中学生でも、コロナの記憶は意外なほど鮮明なはずです。
「給食は前を向いて食べた」
「マスクをしていた」
「修学旅行が中止になった」など、自分事で英語表現ができるでしょう。
そして授業最後に投げかけたい質問が、こちら。
Final Question
Why do some people think climate change may cause more pandemics in the future?
（なぜ気候変動によって、将来パンデミックが増えるかもしれないと考える人がいるのでしょうか？）
答えは英語でなく、日本語で自由に考えてもらいます。
5月なのに真夏日が続く今年。
「地球温暖化」という遠い話ではなく、自分が感じる暑さ
世界の感染症
将来の社会
が一本につながり、それを世界語の英語で、自分事でカバーする。
次世代が生き残る術の一つであると思っています。
