(E) The Midnight Ride of Sybil Ludington
On the night of April 26, 1777, during the American Revolution, a messenger arrived at American commander Henry Ludington’s house.
The messenger warned of a coming British attack, but Ludington’s soldiers were scattered around the region.
The commander’s daughter, Sybil, bravely volunteered to alert them.
Though just 16 years old, Sybil rode on horseback for over 65 kilometers in stormy weather.
Thanks to her night ride, the troops assembled and drove away the British.
After the war, however, Sybil was forgotten for many years.
Some historians question whether Sybil’s ride ever really happened.
While documents show that the British attack occurred, there are no official records of Sybil’s journey.
It appeared in a history book published in the 1800s, but the book failed to give sources to confirm it.
Nevertheless, the story has been widely accepted, and Sybil has become a symbol of the role of women in the American Revolution.

要旨
・アメリカの独立戦争時（1777年）、イギリス軍の攻撃が差し迫っていた。伝令から司令官のHenry Ludingtonに報告が入ったが、軍は散らばっており、緊急に集結させる必要があった。それを知った16歳の娘Sybil Ludingtonが伝令の役目を自ら志願し、馬に乗って嵐の中を65キロも疾走し、任務を果たした。その活躍のおかげで、軍は集結し、イギリス軍を押し返すことができた。ところが、この活躍は本には書かれていなかったので、戦後、彼女の活躍は忘れ去られてしまった。1800年代にこのことに関する本が出たが、彼女が活躍したことを証明する情報源が書かれていなかったので、疑問視する声もあった。にも拘わらず、彼女は、独立戦争時に活躍した女性として名を遺した。

Laura Secord is a famous figure in Canada.
During the War of 1812, in which Canada and Britain fought against the United States, American soldiers invaded Canada.
A group of American soldiers forced Secord's family to let them stay in their house.
Secord overheard them planning an attack on the British at a place called Beaver Dams.
She traveled 30 kilometers through dangerous forests filled with enemy soldiers to alert the British.
Knowing that the attack was coming helped the British to defeat the Americans.
For some time, however, a few historians thought the story was partly untrue.
This is because documents written at the time of the battle do not mention Secord.
The historians also believed the British had already been warned by local allies.
However, documents written by the British commander some years later were uncovered in 1959.
These documents confirmed that Secord had indeed brought him the information.

要旨
・カナダ/イギリス連合軍がアメリカと戦争した時（1812年）、アメリカがカナダに侵攻した。Laura Secordさんの家もアメリカ兵が占拠して、家族は軟禁状態に置かれた。アメリカ兵たちがイギリス軍を攻撃する計画を立てているのを立ち聞きした彼女は、危険な森を30キロも走って、イギリス軍に通報に行った。そのおかげで、イギリス軍はアメリカ軍を打ち負かすことができた。ところが、戦闘記録には彼女の名前が書いてなかったので、彼女の手柄を疑問視する歴史家も居た。しかし、戦後数年経ってイギリス軍司令官が書いた戦闘記録が、150年後に発見され、そこには、彼女が通報したことが書いてあった。それで、彼女は救国の英雄としてカナダの有名人になった
