数字の習得は、言語学習のひとつの肝と言えます。
レッスンをしていると、英語のリスニングで理解が止まることがあります。
例外なく、大きな数字が出てきたとき、聞いたことがない固有名詞が出てきたとき、この2つです。
今日は、英語での数字表現について解説します。
私は、受講生に下記のように数字を理解するよう指導しています。
ご覧いただくとわかるように、一定のルールがあります。
これを覚えてしまえば、難しくなくなるかもしれません。
日本人にとって、ややこしいと感じるのは、このようなことが起こるからです。
例えば、ニュースで
「今日の東京電力管内の予想電力使用量は、3750万キロワットです」
と話があったとします。
日本語の3750万キロワットを、英語では、37．5millionキロワットと表現します。
英語には、「万」で数える習慣がありません。
私たちは、小さいころから漢字を使ったカウントに慣れているので、三桁ずつカウントしていく英語の方法についていくのが難しいのです。
これに為替レートが入ると、さらに困難になります。

英語は、3桁すなわち1,000ずつ単位が上がっていきます
日本人の感覚に合わないのは10億の単位です
100億は10億が10個、1,000億は10億が100個と数えまず

何十もの dozens of (tens ofは聞いたことがないのですが文法的にはOKかもしれません、dozenは12ですがこのように使います）
