これまで度々、英語は同じ単語を繰り返すことを極端に嫌う文化だと書きましたが、
いま、受講生と使っている教材でよい例を紹介します。

【Coffee】　を【the black beverage 】

【America 】を【the New World 】とすかさず言い換えている点も注目です。

62 The History of Coffee

There are many legends surrounding the origins of 【coffee】, but scientists agree that its beneficial properties were first discovered in Africa.

However, the actual cultivation of 【coffee】 started on the Arabian Peninsula around the 15th century, and within a hundred years it was a popular drink in many parts of the Middle East. Coffee houses were established, and they became town centers where people met and traded information.

Thanks to merchants, 【the black beverage】 soon found its way to Europe. Because it was so refreshing and energizing, it replaced beer and wine, the common morning drinks of the time, by the 17th century.

【America】 was a bit slow to accept 【coffee】, though it was introduced there right after it had appeared in Europe. After the Boston Tea Party, however, when American colonists destroyed the tea cargo of British ships to protest high taxes, 【coffee】 became the number one drink in 【the New World】 as well.
