ホロコーストからガザへ、歴史的皮肉と悲劇を英語で把握する
My life in Gaza: 'Do you know the series Squid Game?'
「俺たちはイカゲームをやらされている。」
先日、英紙ガーディアンに、ガザに住む青年が、韓国の映画で、殺人ゲームを描いたドラマ、「イカゲーム」にガザの状況を例えた手記が掲載されました。
世界的に人気のこのドラマは、当会でも、実際観たり、少なくとも名前を聞いたことがある生徒がほとんどです。
なので、この記事をガザ現況理解のフックにするか悩みましたが、やはり、その前に、今一度、この状況が起きた歴史的経緯を、英語で把握して欲しいと思いました。
今回、ガザに関しては、国連が民族浄化（ethnic cleansing)、ジェノサイド(genoside)といった、先の大戦のホロコーストで初めて使われた言葉に相当する言葉で警告しているほどの状況です。
では、なぜ戦後イスラエルがパレスチナの地に建設されたか、またこの戦争は宗教の違いが根底にあり、イスラエルはユダヤ教で、ガザはイスラム教であるといった基本的な知識を、授業で何度やっても、なぜか生徒たちは、しかとインプットできないのです。
（1週間たつと忘れている！！）
「なんという国際社会音痴なのだ！、やはり、いくら世界で戦争が起きても、どうしても他人事でしかとらえられない、日本の若者は世界的リアリティーがないのだ。」と愕然とします。
英語が話せても、イスラエルとパレスチナの対立の歴史を知らなければ、国際社会では恥をかきます。ホロコーストからイスラエル建国、そして宗教の違いが生んだ対立は、世界の人々にとって「常識」なのです。
そこを理解していなければ、どんなに英語が上手でも、その意見は浅く聞こえるでしょう。ただ英語を話すだけではなく、背景を理解して発言できる国際人になって欲しいというのが、私が当会を設立した根本的な動機です。
そこで、やはり今一度、イスラエル・ガザ戦争の歴史的な皮肉と悲劇と題して、改めて宗教の違いを軸に、ホロコーストからイスラエル建国、現在のガザまでの歴史的アイロニーを含めた英文（準2級レベル）を今一度読み直しましょう。
The Irony and tragedy of History: From the Holocaust to Gaza
During World War II, millions of Jewish people were killed in the Holocaust.
After this tragedy, the world felt strong sympathy for the Jews.
In 1948, the State of Israel was created as a safe homeland for them.
This was supported by the United Nations, and many Jews moved there.
However, the land was already home to Palestinian Arabs, most of whom were Muslims. Soon, conflict began.
The Middle East War broke out in 1948, and many Palestinians lost their homes.
Since then, Israel and its Arab neighbors have fought several wars.
The conflict is deeply connected to religion. Jews, Christians, and Muslims all see the land of Israel and Palestine as holy. Jerusalem is especially important, but this makes peace very difficult.
Today, the Gaza Strip shows the tragic irony of history.
Words like “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide,” first used to describe the Holocaust,
are now used for Gaza. The people who once suffered great persecution
are now accused of causing great suffering to others.
This painful situation shows how religion, history, and politics are linked.
For students, it is important to think: How can religion bring peace instead of war?
Can people learn from the tragedy of the past to build a better future?
These questions remain urgent for the world today.
