英文法5分ドリル【否定】④

＜more than S can do＞
「Sが～できる以上のこと」
　▸「Sには～できない」
という否定表現を形成する。　
なお do の位置には
stand, bear
といった動詞が用いられることもある。
＜more than S can stand [bear] ＞
「Sには耐えられない」
も押えておきたい。
正解：
それは私の手に負えません。
That is more than I can do for you.
I'm unable to do more for you than that.
Doing anything beyond that for you exceeds my capacity.
What you're asking for exceeds my ability to help.

＜the last A to do ＞
と同じように
＜the last A＋関係代名詞＞
も否定内容を表し
「もっとも ～ しそうにないA」　
「けっして ～ しないA」
the last man
を先行詞とする関係詞節
　I wanted to meet there
を作る。
　the last man I wanted to meet there
を himの目的格補語（SVOCのC）として
I thought him
の後ろに置く。
the last man
の後ろは目的格の関係代名詞を補って考える。
正解：
とんでもない所でとんでもないやつに会ったものだと思った。
I thought him the last man I wanted to meet there.
He was the least desirable person for me to encounter there.
I considered him the most unwanted person I'd meet there.
I regarded him as the person I least wanted to meet at that place.

＜far from A ＞
のAには普通名詞か動名詞などの名詞要素がくるが，
形容詞が置かれることもある。
ここは形容詞を用いて
　was far from easy
とまとめる。
選択肢の it を〈形式主語〉として文頭に位置させ，
真の主語を不定詞でまとめる。　
＜come by A ＞（＝obtain A）
「Aを手に入れる」
正解：
当時、よい職を得るのはけっして容易ではなかった。
In those days it was far from easy to come by a good job.
During that time, finding a good job was quite difficult.
Securing a good job was a challenge back then.
It wasn't easy to find a good job in those days.

＜more than S can bear＞
を用いる。まず，
　It was more than she could bear
を作り，Itは形式主語と考えて bear の後ろに
不定詞句 to think … と続けて真の主語とする。
あまった名詞の her son を動名詞句 wasting his talents
の意味上の主語として機能させる。
正解：
息子が自分の才能を無駄にしていることを考えるのは、彼女にはとても耐えられないことであった。
It was more than she could bear to think of her son wasting his talents.
The thought of her son wasting his talents was unbearable for her.
She couldn't handle the idea of her son squandering his talents.
It was too much for her to imagine her son not utilizing his talents.

＜remain to be done＞
「まだ ～ されていない」
(＝be［have］yet to be done)
この表現はよく
「～しなければならない」《義務》
のニュアンスにも繋がる。
　One hazard remained to be overcome.
　 (あと1つの危険を克服しなければならない)
still remains の still はなくても意味は変わらないが、
よくセットで用いられる。
正解：
彼の行動の結果がどうなるかは後になってみないとわからない。
The result of his action still remains to be seen.
We're still waiting to see the outcome of his actions.
The consequences of what he did are yet to be fully revealed.
The aftermath of his actions is still uncertain and pending.

＜never … without doing ＞
「…すると必ず ～ する」
「Aを思い出す」は
＜remember A ＞
と表現するが
remind は人を目的語に取る他動詞で,
ここで用いると次のようになる。
＜be reminded of A＞
正解：
この本を読むたびに懐かしい昔を思い出す。
I never read this book without being reminded of my old days.
Every time I read this book, memories of my old days come flooding back.
Reading this book always triggers memories of my past.
Whenever I delve into this book, it brings back vivid memories of my earlier days.
This book never fails to remind me of my past whenever I read it.

当時、よい職を得るのはけっして容易ではなかった。

息子が自分の才能を無駄にしていることを考えるのは、彼女にはとても耐えられないことであった。

⑴ anything but 「…どころではない」
　　He is anything but a musician.
（彼はミュージシャンどころではない）
⑵ the last 名 to do/関係詞節… 「最も…しそうにない～」
　　He is the last person to tell a lie.
（彼は最も嘘をつきそうにない人間だ）
⑶ far from
　「…どころではない」
　　The result is far from satisfactory.
　　(その結果は満足に遠く及ばない)
⑷ beyond/above
　「…を超越している」
　　He is above stealing.
　　（彼は盗みをするような人間ではない）
⑸ never fail to do
　「…必ず～するのを忘れない」
　　Never fail to go to wash your hands before going for a drive.

　「…から開放されている」

6 〈倒置〉 否定語・only・well ＋助＋S V
　　I little dreamed of seeing him again.
　　➪ Little did I dream of seeing him again.
　 (彼に再び会えるとは夢にも思っていなかった)
　　I have never seen her since then.

　（それ以来，彼女には一度たりとも会っていない）
