Successful treatment of essential hypertension with medicinal herbs

Vast number of physiological factors participate in normal tissue perfusion to control arterial blood pressure (mosaic theory).
The therapeutic efficacy of the systems medicine, using medicinal herbs was evaluated in 10 patients with essential hypertension. Medicinal herbs were administered to 10 patients with essential hypertension according to differential diagnosis by systems review based on the guideline of traditional herbal medicine. Arterial blood pressure was measured after 14 and 28 days of the herb administration. Each patient with arterial hypertension showed functional abnormalities in multiple systems. The patients with multiple affected systems were treated by the multiple recipes which were expected to be effective against each of these abnormal systems. After 4 weeks of the treatment, the mean systolic blood pressure of the 10 patients decreased from 171.6 ±15.8mmHg to 127.0±7.3 mmHg. The mean diastolic blood pressure also decreased from 99.±12.6 mmHg to 78.3 ±7.4mmHg. The lowered blood pressure was maintained even after 3 months of the treatment. The result implies a therapeutic potential of systems medicine with traditional medicinal herbs for essential hypertension.
