免許を捨てて業界外に出る勇気　薬剤師の働き方改革　Work Style Reform for Pharmacists (In the Case of Japan)

先日、SNSの活用法について紹介しました。今はSNSは政治の世界にも大きな影響をもたらすメディアであることは誰もが認める時代と言えます。誰もが一台のスマホを持っていれば情報や意見を世の中に発表することのできる時代です。

1)薬剤師のキャリアプラン

色々なSNSがありますが、最近になってようやくに日本でも、ビジネスマン向けのSNSであるLinkedin が認知され始めてきたようです。

今は一つの会社に留まるのではなく、自分の価値を高めるためにも転職をして、いろいろな経験を積んでいくことが良いと言われています。一つの会社に留まると、自分に与えられた仕事や役割については業務がこなせるようになっても、幅広い経験値が積めなくなるということも確かに言えることです。


薬剤師の世界で言うと、そもそもが薬剤師の働きは多くの場合、半径10メートルくらいの狭い空間で完結してしまう場合も少なくないため、一つの役割にハマりやすい面が間違いなくあります。又だいたい6割以上が女性で占められる業界です。女性は結婚し、家庭を持つことで、職場を離れることもめずらしくありません。そのような背景から、薬剤師としてのキャリアを積むことまで意識が向かわない背景があると思います。

ですから薬剤師にとってはLinkedinのようなSNSは、どこか疎遠な世界であるとも言えます。

2)多様な薬剤師の働き方を作り出す

でも、薬剤師の働きもわたし自身は色々だと思っています。

かつてのように、右から来た処方箋を処理して左に回していくような業務ではなく、一人一人の患者様に向かい合うことで、いかに「1人の」薬剤師としての働きを成していくのか？いわばPharmacistから【a】 Pharmacist になっていくということが大事と考えています。

3)「個性」を持った薬剤師で良い

これは薬剤師の個性化と言っても良いと思います。

「個性的」であるということはネガディブな意味合いを持たれやすいものです。実際、社会的な修練が足りないことによる個性というものは、もちろん修練して乗り越えて行かなければなりません。

その上で、その人特有の関心とか技術、能力に基づいた個性をいかに熟達させていくか？ということが大事だと思います。


その上で大切なことは以下のことだと思います。

• その人の内側から自然と生まれる内発的な動機に基づくこと
• 経歴から生まれる特性を活かす道を探ること
• 別な業界の動き、変化から謙遜に学び続けること

4)薬剤師としての個性を作り上げる上で大切なこと

①その人の内側から自然と生まれる内発的な動機に基づくこと

自主的に取り組めることはその人の何よりの強みです。大阪のユニバーサルスタジオの発展に貢献してきたマーケターである森岡毅さんの番組では、自分の興味のあることが大事なのではなく、既に「すること」「していること」そのものがその人の強みなのだという説明をされていました。

それが周りの人に対して優れた成果や成績を出していることが大事なのではなく、自然とそれが出来ているかどうか？それが大事なのだ、と。

例えばわたしであれば、富士登山をして六号目に至るまでにすでに太ももを痛めてしまうくらいの身体能力になっしまっていますが、それでも、痛い足を踏み出して、雨風と暗闇の中、楽しく登山することが出来る・・。自慢にもならないかもしれませんが、少なくとも森岡さんの視点で言えばそれはわたしの強みです。登山の楽しみ、興奮、素晴らしさ、ときには怖さを感得してきたからこその強みです。

また正直、わたしには文学コンプレックスがあります。なので毎年、芥川賞が発表されると、今年はどんな作家、どんな作品が登場したのかと気になって仕方がない・・。なんなら、来年の芥川賞受賞作品を夢想したりしてしまう。・・それもまたわたしの強みと考えています。どんな仕事をするにしても言葉を使う以上は、そのような関心は、必ず自分自身の強みとなると信じてます。

またわたしは6人の子供を育てる親として、日々、子供たちの成長に向かい合っています。いろいろな家庭の子育てのことが気になって、SNSを開くことは日常的なことです。

あそこの子供がどんな習い事を始めたとか、どんな成績を収めたか、どんな進学をしたか・・。その結果として得られる情報は、わたし自身の強みとして、仕事に昇華させたいと日々考えています。親御さんがお子さんを薬局に連れて来られたら、その様子を伺って、自分の興味を生かしてそのご家庭と関わりたいと自然と思うのです。何もなしに目の前の患者様にお薬をお渡しするよりもはるかに良い関わりができるとわたしは信じてます。

②経歴から生まれる特性を活かす道を探ること

薬剤師の場合は高校から大学部の薬学部へと進学して、そのまま薬剤師になる場合がほとんどだと思いますが、私の場合は薬学部に社会人入学して薬剤師免許を取得しました。当然、それまでの自分の人生経験、社会経験が根底にあるのは自覚しています。そしてそれは、若い頃から薬剤師として歩んできたエリート？とは違う筋道です。

でもわたしはこれまで歩んできた全ての背景も、自分の今の仕事に生きていると感じます。人生という視点で言えば、むしろ失敗してきた経験こそが自分の価値を作り出しているとも言えると日々感じます。失敗は痛く辛く、受け難いものだけど、それを活かすも殺すも、自分次第だと思っています。

若い頃から薬剤師として歩み、それしか社会との関わりがないのだとしたら、一度、もし許されるなら、別の仕事をするのも良いのではないかと思います。

なんでも良い。コンビニのバイトでも良いし、Amazonの倉庫で働くのも、Ubereatsをしてみるのも良い・・。周りからは「変わった人」だと思われるかもしれないけど、大切なことはその経験を活かすこと。少なくとも三十代になるまでの体力も自由もあるうちにには、いろいろな仕事に携わるのが、結果的にその人の強みとなる。

③別な業界の動き、変化から謙遜に学び続けること

薬剤師の世界は狭いものです。だから「薬剤師とはこういうもの」という固定観念に近いものが広く蔓延っていると感じます。多くの先輩方のお陰で、日本における薬剤師に対する社会的な信頼度は高い一方で、だからこそ「薬剤師というものはこういうものでなければならない」という考え方が広がっていると思います。


野球で言えば、野球とはこういうものというセリーグ的な発想に対して、外部から色々な考え方を取り入れて結果を出しているパリーグのような発想が、これからの薬剤師業界には必要なのではないかと思うのです。

病院薬剤師にしても大手調剤薬局の薬剤師にしても、今はいろいろな働き方、キャリアプランが用意されていて、一人一人の個性を活かす働き方が出来るようになってきたことは確かなことです。それでも、あらかじめ用意されたコースの中で、どの路線を選び取っていくか？の違いといえば言えると思います。

薬剤師免許があれば、とりあえず日本全国、どこに行っても仕事を得ることが出来ますから、日本中を旅して経験を積んでいく筋道も良いでしょう。


派遣薬剤師として色々な経験を積んでいる人たちも多くいます。一定期間、望まれた地区に出向き、臨時の「職人」として経験を積んでおられます。

でもあえて言えば、むしろ「薬剤師でなくても良い」という発想があっても良いとわたしは思います。薬剤師としての経験をある程度積んで、その経験を土台に、若いうちに別な業界にチャレンジしても良いのではないか？と思います。

今はいろいろなネット上のビジネスコミュニティがあります。

それらは対価を受けて仕事をするのではありません。むしろ参加費を支払って参加し、さまざまな学習会を企画したり作業を請け負って、むしろ奉仕する世界です。そのようにして仕事について学ぶ機会を得るのです。


・・わたしの知る限りこのような仕事について、有償の機会を得るコミュニティは、評論家の岡田斗司夫さんが始められたことです。そこで他業種の人たちと関わり、仕事を学ぶこと・・。現状の仕事をしながらでもそれは出来ることです（特に未婚の時代には）。

冒頭で紹介したビジネス系SNSであるLinkedinも、様々な業種の人たちとの関わりを持つことが出来ます。このLinkedinの主たる目的は、他業種との請負関係の構築だったり、パーソンハンティングだったり転職活動の一環としての側面が実際のところ強いわけですが、そういうお金の動く世界だからこそ、無償のSNSとは違ったラジカルさがあります。その交わりを通して、自分という存在の価値について認識する機会を得ることが出来る。

わたしの高校時代の先輩に、昔旅行会社で働いていた方がいらっしゃいます。この方は、食べることに強い興味を持っていたことと、アメリカのドラマが好きだったことなどがあり、半年、調理師学校で学んで、今はアメリカ各地で旅料理人として活躍していらっしゃいます。すごい働き方だと思います。日々、刺激的なドラマがある。日本人であること、日本食が今や世界的な人気があることを背景として、わたしよりも遥かに稼いでいらっしゃいます。

わたしの目標は、薬剤師免許で仕事をすることではありません。薬剤師であるということを背景として、他の人では出来ない仕事をすることです。

そうは言っても、実際は薬剤師として働いているではないかと言われるかもしれません。確かにそうなのです。でも少なくともわたしの中では、あくまでも薬剤師免許を活用させてもらって、わたし自身のやりたいことをさせてもらっているという自覚を持ち続けたいと思っているのです。

Recently, I shared how to utilize SNS. Today, everyone acknowledges that SNS has become a powerful medium even in politics. In this era, anyone with a smartphone can publish information and opinions to the world.

1) Pharmacist Career Plans

There are various SNS platforms, but only recently has LinkedIn, a professional SNS for businesspeople, begun to be recognized in Japan.

Nowadays, it is said that instead of staying with one company, it is better to change jobs to enhance one’s own value and accumulate various experiences. It’s true that if you stay at one company, while you may become competent in assigned tasks and roles, you miss out on broader experiences in many areas.

In the world of pharmacists, work often concludes within a narrow radius of about ten meters, so it’s easy to get stuck in a single role. Moreover, the industry is comprised of more than 60% women. When women marry and start families, leaving the workplace is not uncommon. Because of this, many may not focus on building their pharmacy careers.

Hence, for pharmacists, SNS like LinkedIn can feel like a distant world.

2) Creating Diverse Work Styles for Pharmacists

But I believe that pharmacists’ work can take many forms.

Rather than the old model of processing prescriptions from right to left, how can each pharmacist engage directly with patients and fulfill a role as a pharmacist? In other words, I think it’s crucial to evolve from “Pharmacist” to a “Pharmacist”: becoming an individual professional through personal engagement.

3) It’s Okay for Pharmacists to Have “Personality”

I think this could also be called pharmacist individuation.

“Being unique” often carries negative connotations. Indeed, personality stemming from insufficient social refinement must be addressed and improved.

Beyond that, the important thing is how one hones a uniqueness based on personal interests, skills, and abilities.

What matters most includes:

• Acting based on internally generated, intrinsic motivation
• Pursuing a path that leverages traits born from one’s own background
• Continuously learning humbly from changes and movements in other industries

4) Things That Matter in Building One’s Unique Pharmacist Identity

① Act Based on Intrinsic Motivation Naturally Arising from Within

Voluntarily engaging in something is one’s greatest strength. In a show featuring Tsuyoshi Morioka, the marketer who contributed to the development of Universal Studios Osaka, the point was not what one is interested in, but that the things you already do, and are doing, are your strengths.

It’s not about producing excellent outcomes for others; what’s important is whether you can do it naturally. That is key.

For example, for me, I have such physical ability that I already injure my thighs by the sixth station of climbing Mt. Fuji, yet still step out with painful legs, enduring rain and darkness, enjoying the climb. It may not be boastful, but from Morioka’s perspective, it’s one of my strengths. I’ve felt the joy, excitement, beauty—and occasionally fear—of mountaineering; that experience is my strength.

Honestly, I have a literary complex. Every year when the Akutagawa Prize is announced, I can’t help but wonder which authors or works have emerged. I even fantasize about next year’s winner… I consider that to be my strength too. In any job involving language, such interests will inevitably become one’s strength.

As a parent raising six children, I face their growth daily. I often open SNS to check what lessons other kids start, what grades they earn, what schools they enter. I always think about how the resulting information can be transformed into my professional strength. When a parent brings their child to the pharmacy, I naturally feel drawn to engage with that family using my interests. I believe that offers a much richer interaction than simply handing over medication.

② Look for Paths That Leverage Characteristics Born from One’s Background

Typically, pharmacists enter university from high school and become pharmacists directly. In my case, I entered pharmacy school later as a working adult and obtained my pharmacist license. I am aware that all my life and work experiences underlie my current role. That path is quite different from those who march straight into pharmacy as elites.

Nevertheless, I feel that everything I have gone through so far lives in my current work. From the perspective of life, I feel that failures have shaped my value. Failure is painful, tough, and hard to accept, but whether it empowers or defeats you depends on yourself.

If someone has walked a conventional path as a pharmacist from youth and only that is their connection to society, I think it might be good to try a different job if allowed.

Anything is fine—working part-time at a convenience store, in an Amazon warehouse, doing UberEats… You might be seen as “unusual,” but what matters is leveraging that experience. At least while you’re in your thirties with energy and freedom, trying various jobs ultimately becomes your strength.

③ Humbly Continue Learning from Changes in Other Industries

The pharmacist world is narrow. Therefore, I feel a pervasive stereotype of “what pharmacists are supposed to be.” Thanks to many predecessors, pharmacists in Japan enjoy high social trust—but that also reinforces the idea that “pharmacists must be this way,” in a limiting sense.

Like baseball: in Japan’s Central League, the mindset of “this is baseball” dominates, but the Pacific League thrives by incorporating diverse external ideas. The same kind of mindset, embracing variety and innovation, may be needed in the future of pharmacy.

Whether a hospital pharmacist or one at a major dispensing chain, many career routes and work styles now exist that let individuals leverage their personality. Still, choices differ depending on which predefined route you select.

With a pharmacy license, you can work anywhere in Japan, so traveling across the country to gain experience is one path.

Many work as temporary pharmacists, gaining experience in various places as short-term “craftspeople.”

If I dare say so, I think it’s okay even if you become something else besides a pharmacist. If you accumulate some pharmacist experience, you could challenge another industry when you’re young.

Nowadays there are many online business communities.

They’re not about earning money. You often pay to join, organize study sessions or take on tasks, and serve others. That’s how you learn about work.

From what I know, such paid, work-learning communities began with critic Toshio Okada. There, people from different professions intersect, learning about work… You can do that while continuing your current job (especially if unmarried).

The business SNS LinkedIn I mentioned at the beginning also allows interaction with people from all industries. While LinkedIn’s main purpose is forming contractual relationships, personal recruiting, or job hunting, its high-stakes environment brings a radical touch that unpaid SNS lack. Through that interaction, you gain opportunities to recognize your own value.

A senior from my high school used to work for a travel agency, loved food, and American TV dramas. After studying at culinary school for half a year, now he works as a traveling chef throughout the US. What an amazing career. Full of daily excitement. With Japanese nationality and global popularity of Japanese cuisine, he earns far more than I do.

My goal is not to work simply as a pharmacist. What I really aim for is to do work that no one else can do, with my background as a pharmacist.

That said, yes—I do actually work as a pharmacist. Of course. But in my mind, I always want to maintain the awareness that I am leveraging my pharmacist license to do what I truly want.
